Chiropractic for puppies

Why is this information important?

When you think about pets struggling with mobility, there is often a slow and gradual onset to their aches and pains. Many pet parents share with me that they don't know why they waited so long to get started. When you see how much relief your pet can get from chiropractic care, it begs the question: why don't we do this preventatively? There is so much chiropractic can do for your animal BEFORE a problem starts

Why would I get my puppy adjusted

Aid in proper growth and development

👉🏻 Did you know that your pet's skeleton isn't fully developed until 6-8 months of age? The larger the breed, the longer it takes for growth plates to fuse. The forces we place upon the skeleton effect it's growth so it's important to correct subtle alignment issues before they become permanent. The saying goes: As the twig bends, so grows the tree.

Early detection (and prevention) of joint problems

👉🏻 There are several orthopedic conditions that can manifest in a pet's younger years. An animal chiropractor is a trained specialist that can detect subtle joint dysfunction to make sure that your pet is on the path of proper development. During puppy examinations, I often check for (and rule out) orthopedic problems in the hips, knees, and elbows to make sure that we are setting up a young puppy up for success for the adult life.

May boost their confidence with socialization

👉🏻 Many pets have "stranger danger." This can include new places and new people. Going to the animal chiropractor can be a repeated source of new sights, smells, and experiences that can boost your pet's confidence as they grow and develop. Most animal chiropractic visits will be happy visits which can help your animal build positive associations with strangers evaluating them.

How often should I take my puppy to see the animal chiropractor?

A young, healthy puppy can start going to see an animal chiropractor as early as 6-8 weeks of age. Your provider should do a thorough exam that rules out any orthopedic issues prior to working on them.

Chiropractic care for a puppy may look different than it does for adult dogs as most of the bones and joints are still very pliable and/or still made of cartilage.

For wellness care, most puppies can be seen every 8 weeks to receive optimal benefit. Should there be a complaint or should your puppy be at high risk for joint problems, you may discuss doing care more frequently with your provider.

In summary

There are so many benefits to taking your puppy to see an animal chiropractor. On top of the health benefits of early detection and prevention, it's also great desensitization training for your animal so they can get used to strangers touching and evaluating them.

An animal chiropractor can be a valuable member of your pet's care team as you work to CREATE health and wellness instead of waiting to REACT to pain and disease.
